This report consists of three items: (1)Study of the repository configuration, (2)Study of the surface facilities configuration for construction, operation and buckfilling, (3)Planning schedule, In the repository configuration, the basic factors influencing the design of the repository configuration are presented, and the results of studies of various possible repository configurations are presented for both hard and soft rock systems. Here, the minimum conditions regarding geological environment required to guide design are assumed, because it is difficult to determine the repository configuration without considering specific conditions of a disposal site. In the surface facility configuration, it is illustrated based on the results of construction, operation, buckfilling studies for underground disposal facility and EIS report of CANADA. In the schedule, the overall schedule corresponding to the repository layout is outlined in link with the milestone of disposal schedule set forth in the government's basic policy. The assumptions and the basic conditions are summarized to examine the General Schedule from start of construction to closure of a repository. This summaly is based on the technologies to be used for construction, operation and closure of a repository. The basic national policies form the framework for this review of the general schedule.

Groundwater Evolution Modeling for the Second Progress Performance Assessment (PA) Report

According to the Japanese program for research and development of high level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal defined by Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), the second progress report (i.e., H-12 report) for performance assessment (PA) of HLW disposal is to be published by the Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute (JNC) and submitted to the Japanese government before the year 2,000 (AEC, 1997). This report presents the establishment of generic groundwater chemical compositions for the PA supporting the H-12 report. The following five hypothetical groundwaters are categorized for PA based on the results of the first progress report (i.e., H-3 report) and binaly statistical analyses of the screened groundwater dataset: (1)FRHP(Fresh-Reducing-High-pH) groundwater (2)FRLP(Fresh-Reducing-Low-pH) groundwater (3)SRHP(Saline-Reducing-High-pH) groundwater (4)SRLP(Saline-Reducing-Low-pH) groundwater (5)MRNP(Mixing-Reducing-Neutral-pH) groundwater. In order to define representative groundwater compositions for the PA for the H-12 report, JNC has established the representativeness of the above five hypothetical groundwaters by considering the results of multivariate statistical analyses, data reliability, evidence for geochemical controls on groundwater chemistry and exclusion criteria for potential repository sites in Japan. As a result, the following hypothetical reference groundwaters are selected for the performance assessment analysis in H-12 report, respectively: (1)Reference Case groundwater: FRHP groundwater, and (2)Alternative Geological Environment Case groundwater: SRHP groundwater. In addition, JNC has consulted with overseas experts on the concepts used in groundwater evolution modeling. This modeling effort has focussed on simulating equilibrium water-rock interactions to predict groundwater compositions resulting from reactions between initial water compositions and rock mineral assemblages. The "First progress report of research and development ongeological disposal of high level radioactive waste",H3 in short,is intended for the Japanese authorities. In accordance with the "Overall program for high level radioactive waste management" set forth by atomic energy commission, H3 is designed to clarify the current status of the research and development work performed by power reactor and nuclear fuel development corporation (PNC) up to the year 1991. H3 presents the updated knowledge on Japan's geological environment, the technology of geological disposal and the performance assessment of the multi-barrier system as a basis for further research and development with the objective of confirming scientific and technical feasibility of the geological disposal concept in Japan. The contents of H3 issummarized in this document.
